Flipping the script on donations.
These days, paying for something is almost effortless. A quick tap, a scan, and it is done. But donating? That still feels stuck in the past, like rattling a tin can on flag day. QRious Giving set out to change that by blending the satisfying charm of old school flip dot displays with the simple act of scanning a QR code.
The project was born out of two sparks. First, the realization that while digital transactions have become seamless, charitable giving has not caught up. And second, the fascination of watching hundreds of tiny dots flip and click in unison, analogue, mechanical, but strangely mesmerizing. The idea was to connect those dots, literally.
Leading with curiosity.
Instead of a static black and white QR code, QRious Giving creates a living canvas. As people walk by, the flip dot display reacts, mirroring their movements in playful, abstract patterns. Once curiosity takes hold, the display reveals its true purpose: an invitation to scan and explore more. Only then, on their own phone and in their own time, can people decide to give, keeping the process private and pressure free.
For those who donate, the thank you is not just a polite message. The display performs a one of a kind animation, a small performance that turns gratitude into something memorable and shareable. Donors can post it online just as proudly as someone might wear a charity sticker, spreading the word in their own way. Even those who do not donate still leave with a smile from the playful exchange.
By turning an overlooked code into a living, interactive moment, QRious Giving makes charity less about transaction and more about connection. It is a reminder that giving can be joyful, surprising, and just like those flipping dots, utterly captivating.
Singapore Design Week with Just A Band Of Creatives (JABOC)
Under new creative leadership, JABOC presents Playful Living, one of the showcases of Design For Care at Marina Central, a key event of Singapore Design Week 2025. People are invited to rediscover the quiet power of play in everyday life. Here, play is not a luxury, but a fundamental human need, essential for nurturing a more imaginative, empathetic and deeply human way of living. QRious Giving was conceived uniquely for this exhibition.
QRious Giving @ Design Social - An Extension of EMERGE 2025
Design Social, an extension of EMERGE 2025, highlights process-driven projects from across
Asia that are advancing inclusivity and social impact. The curation demonstrates how design can
engage people of all abilities while building systems that are both inclusive and meaningful.
Beyond the individual works, Design Social also shines a light on the people and entities leading
this movement - showing how our diverse efforts are converging in an exciting and promising
chapter for inclusive design.
John, the curator of Design Social, resonated with the motivation behind QRious Giving and Folks Kitchenware and hence both projects had the privilege to be showcased.
