Industrial waste is a prevalent problem in our world today. A major contributor to this issue is industrial cling wrap - often castoff and rarely recycled. To encourage a sustainable, closed loop ecosystem, Lunar and Jupiter are a series of light vessels were made from discarded cling wrap and embodies an opportunity: how waste can be perceived as a potential material of beauty. Sheets of cling wrap are compactly baked in an oven, creating a sensuous silhouette which celebrates the material’s lightness and transformation.
Trash To Treasure.
The making process is inspired by thermoforming: individual sheets of cling wrap are carefully layered and heat compressed in an industrial oven between two metal plates, creating a sheet of the ideal material. Prior to layering, cling wrap sheets have to be thoroughly cleaned to remove excess moisture and dirt. Otherwise, it can result in bubbling. The baked material can then be cut into desired shapes. Heat and pressure can be reapplied to bond separate layers together.
